-George Crum died in 1904 at the age of 92 and left behind the legacy of creating the greatest snack food of all time.
ReplyDelete-George Crum was born as George Speck in 1822 in Saratoga Lake, New York, the son of a Huron Native-American mother and an African-American father who worked as a jockey.
- He worked for a while as a mountain guide and trapper in the Adirondack Mountains in New York.
-n 1853 he became the head chef at the Cary Moon’s Lake House in Lake Saratoga, New York and on one evening set out preparing the evening dinner for the guests.
-He intended to make french fries but a guest complained that they were too thick.
- Annoyed, he prepared another batch and sliced the potatoes extremely thin.
- After deep frying them in oil he found them very thin and very crisp and after adding salt found that the guests loved them.
-George began preparing the potatoes this way and they would soon become known as potato chips.
-In 1860 George decided to open his own restaurant on Malta Avenue in Saratoga Lake.

5. When he was 14, he moved to Cincinatti, Ohio, in search of employment.
6. Like many African Americans back then, he had to quit school in order to work. However, he hired his own tutor and continued his studies.
7. In 1909, he expanded his business to include a tailoring shop.

3.Fred Jones was born on May 17, 1893 in Covington, Kentucky.
4. His father was a white railroad worker of Irish descent and his mother was Black.
5. At an early age, Fred demonstrated a great interest in mechanical working, whether taking apart a toy, a watch or a kitchen appliance.
6. After a few years of building these cars, Fred desired to drive them and soon became one of the most well known racers in the Great Lakes region.
7.On August 1, 1918 Jones enlisted in the 809 Pioneer Infantry of the United States Army and served in France during World War I.
8.Over the next few years Fred began tinkering with almost everything he could find, inventing things he could not find and improving upon those he could.
9.In 1927, Jones was faced with the problem of helping friend convert their silent movie theater into a “talkie” theater.
10. Jones died on February 21, 1961 and was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Technology, one of the greatest honors an inventor could receive. Jones was the first Black inventor to ever receive such an honor.

~The foundry eventually employed more than 25 workers and manufactured slide valve engines and reapers

Elijah McCoy was born in Colchester, Ontario, Canada on May 2, 1844. His parents were George and Emillia McCoy, former slaves from Kentucky who escaped through the Underground Railroad. George joined the Canadian Army, fighting in the Rebel War and then raised his family as free Canadian citizens on a 160 acre homestead.

Recognizing his keen abilities, George and Emillia saved enough money to send Elijah to Edinburgh, Scotland, where he could study mechanical engineering. After finishing his studies as a “master mechanic and engineer” he returned to the United States which had just seen the end of the Civil War – and the emergence of the “Emancipation Proclamation.”
