1.George Washington Carver was born into slavery in Diamond, Missouri, around 1864. The exact year and date of his birth are unknown. Carver went on to become one of the most prominent scientists and inventors of his time, as well as a teacher at the Tuskegee Institute. Carver devised over 100 products using one of these crops—the peanut—including dyes, plastics and gasoline. He died in 1943.

4.A week after his birth, George was kidnapped along with his sister and mother from the Carver farm by raiders from the neighboring state of Arkansas.
5.After graduating from Iowa State, Carver embarked on a career of teaching and research. Booker T. Washington, the principal of the African-American Tuskegee Institute, hired Carver to run the school's agricultural department in 1896.
6.Washington lured the promising young botanist to the institute with a hefty salary and the promise of two rooms on campus, while most faculty members lived with a roommate. Carver's special status stemmed from his accomplishments and reputation, as well as his degree from a prominent institution not normally open to black students.
7.Tuskegee's agricultural department achieved national renown under Carver's leadership, with a curriculum and a faculty that he helped to shape.
8.Areas of research and training included methods of crop rotation and the development of alternative cash crops for farmers in areas heavily planted with cotton. This work helped struggling sharecroppers in the South, many of them former slaves now faced with necessary cultivation under harsh conditions, including the devastation of the boll weevil in 1892.

4. For John L. Love, this repetitive task was having to stop writing notes or letters in able to pull out his knife to whittle his pencil down to a point again.
5.On November 23, 1897, Love patented the pencil sharpener which called for a user to turn a crank and rotor off thin slices of wood from the pencil until a point was formed

ReplyDeleteGrowing up in the 1930s in Saratoga Springs, isn't easy for George Crum because he was always getting picked on.
George Crum has a wife, a father, a son, a daughter, a sister, another son, a mother.
His mother's name is Catherine Speck. His father's name is Abraham Speck. his wife's name is Hester Bennett. His daughter's name is Cynthia Crum. His Son's name is George Crum. His sister's name is Mary Speck.
Decades before Crum became a chef versions of fried potato slices were published in several cookbooks.
In 1860 Crum opened his own lakeside restaurant Crum's House in Malta; according to popular accounts, he used profits made selling his chips, and was said to include a basket of chips on every table.
In 1832, a recipe for fried potato "shavings" was included in a United States cookbook derived from an earlier English collection.
The story about Crum and the potato chips became more widely known after the 1930s, and is featured in a 1940 history of Saratoga by Hugh Bradley.
Crum was reportedly married five times, and his wives, children and extended family were known to work at his restaurant.
Learning the area as a child, George Crum later worked as a trapper and an Adirondack hunting guide.
